1. Highlights

Creativity in Principled Innovation involves finding new solutions to problems through expansive and generative thinking. It involves seeking out multiple perspectives and making new connections between the resources in our learning communities. Creativity is the necessary first step to innovation, when we come up with the ideas that can then be put into practice.

Find new solutions to problems through generative, expansive thinking

Ask questions and try out new experiences to generate fresh ideas

Stay curious and bring together a diversity of voices in inclusive settings

Creativity requires a willingness to stay curious about things we notice, especially when they may contradict our current understanding. It also involves humility and an openness to new perspectives and ways of thinking. Whether the problems we are looking to address are within a single classroom or affect stakeholders across much larger systems, the creative process involves finding fresh ideas that draw on multiple and diverse perspectives and build on a rich understanding of our learning systems.

While many people associate creativity with artistic talent, creativity is actually a mindset that anyone can develop, a process in which anyone can participate and an asset that can be nurtured within our educational environments. We can cultivate creativity by building inclusive environments that bring together and honor the voices and input of people with diverse experiences. We can facilitate creativity by asking questions and trying out new experiences. Engaging perspective taking, empathy, and collaboration to deepen our understanding of the values, culture and context that affect our learning environments helps give rise to divergent voices and fresh ideas. The more divergent experiences and perspectives we have to draw from, the more connections we can make to bring about new solutions, and the deeper our well of creativity can become.
