Questioning sources of data and understanding where information comes from is an important part of truth-seeking. While data generated by computer algorithms may seem objective because it comes from a machine, it is humans who built the machines and designed the algorithms. As sociologist Zeynep Tufekci explains in this New York Times article, not only can algorithms be biased, but they reflect the needs and priorities of the companies developing them, rather than those of their users.
